In short
- Sizes come in shape families: 2:3 (4x6, 12x18, 24x36), 3:4 (12x16, 18x24), 4:5 (8x10, 16x20), and ISO A sizes at 1:1.414 (A4, A3, A2).
- One file prints cleanly at every size in its family; moving to another family means cropping or white edges.
- For a sharp print, a file needs about 300 pixels per inch: 2400 x 3000 for 8x10, 5400 x 7200 for 18x24.
- A frame's name is its inside size. With a mat it holds a smaller print: IKEA's 30x40 cm frame takes an A4-size picture with the mount.
- Most of the common sizes are sold at ordinary print counters: Walgreens posters run 11x14 to 24x36, Staples posters 12x18 to 36x48.
Standard wall art sizes come in shape families. In inches: 2:3 (4x6, 12x18, 24x36), 3:4 (12x16, 18x24), 4:5 (8x10, 16x20), plus 5x7 and 11x14. In metric: the ISO A sizes (A4, A3, A2, A1) and frames such as 30x40, 40x50 and 50x70 cm. Pick the family first, then the size that fits your wall.
Thinking in families answers the question most size charts skip: which sizes one picture can be printed at without cropping. The charts below give every size with its shape, its metric or inch twin, and the pixels a digital file needs.
Wall art sizes chart by ratio
Ratio is the long side divided by the short side. Every size in a row has the same shape, so a file made for one prints at the others with nothing cut off.
| Ratio | Inch sizes | Metric sizes |
|---|---|---|
| 2:3 (1.5) | 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, 16x24, 20x30, 24x36 | 10x15 cm |
| 3:4 (1.33) | 6x8, 9x12, 12x16, 18x24 | 30x40 cm |
| 4:5 (1.25) | 4x5, 8x10, 16x20 | 40x50 cm |
| ISO A (1.414) | close to 5x7 (1.4) | A5, A4, A3, A2, A1; 50x70 cm (1.4) |
| 11x14 (1.27) | 11x14 only | none |
| US Letter (1.29) | 8.5x11 | none |
The ISO numbers come from ISO 216: A4 is 210 x 297 mm, A3 297 x 420, A2 420 x 594, A1 594 x 841, and the height divided by the width of every A size is the square root of two, about 1.414. That is why an A4 file scales to A3 or A2 without a crop. US Letter (216 x 279 mm) is a different shape, and so is 11x17.
Standard wall art sizes in inches and centimetres
The same chart sorted by size, with conversions (1 inch = 2.54 cm):
| Size | Inches | Centimetres | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5x7 | 5 x 7 | 12.7 x 17.8 | 1.4 |
| A4 | 8.27 x 11.69 | 21 x 29.7 | 1.414 |
| 8x10 | 8 x 10 | 20.3 x 25.4 | 1.25 |
| Letter | 8.5 x 11 | 21.6 x 27.9 | 1.29 |
| 11x14 | 11 x 14 | 27.9 x 35.6 | 1.27 |
| 30x40 cm | 11.8 x 15.7 | 30 x 40 | 1.33 |
| 12x16 | 12 x 16 | 30.5 x 40.6 | 1.33 |
| A3 | 11.69 x 16.54 | 29.7 x 42 | 1.414 |
| 12x18 | 12 x 18 | 30.5 x 45.7 | 1.5 |
| 16x20 | 16 x 20 | 40.6 x 50.8 | 1.25 |
| 40x50 cm | 15.7 x 19.7 | 40 x 50 | 1.25 |
| 18x24 | 18 x 24 | 45.7 x 61 | 1.33 |
| A2 | 16.54 x 23.39 | 42 x 59.4 | 1.414 |
| 50x70 cm | 19.7 x 27.6 | 50 x 70 | 1.4 |
| 20x30 | 20 x 30 | 50.8 x 76.2 | 1.5 |
| A1 | 23.39 x 33.11 | 59.4 x 84.1 | 1.414 |
| 24x36 | 24 x 36 | 61 x 91.4 | 1.5 |
Some near-twins are easy to mix up. 30x40 cm and 12x16 in are the same shape but not the same size; a 12x16 print (30.5 x 40.6 cm) is about half a centimetre too large for a frame made for 30x40 cm. A3 and 12x16 differ by more than a centimetre on the long side.
What size should printable wall art be? Pixels per size
A printable file has no size in inches, only pixels. How large it prints well depends on how many pixels land on each inch. Printful, which prints posters to order, strongly recommends files at 300 DPI. Multiply each side in inches by 300:
| Print size | Pixels at 300 per inch |
|---|---|
| 4x6 | 1200 x 1800 |
| 5x7 | 1500 x 2100 |
| 8x10 | 2400 x 3000 |
| A4 | 2480 x 3508 |
| 11x14 | 3300 x 4200 |
| 12x16 | 3600 x 4800 |
| A3 | 3508 x 4961 |
| 12x18 | 3600 x 5400 |
| 16x20 | 4800 x 6000 |
| 18x24 | 5400 x 7200 |
| A2 | 4961 x 7016 |
| 24x36 | 7200 x 10800 |
So a printable sold as "one file for 2:3 sizes" should be at least 7200 x 10800 pixels if it promises 24x36. Printful's minimum for paper products is much lower, 75 DPI, so a smaller file still prints; it is the 300 figure that keeps it sharp. Printful also asks for files in the sRGB colour profile (sRGB IEC61966-2.1) and converts them to CMYK for printing.
Frame sizes: why an 8x10 frame can hold a 5x7
A frame is named after its inside size, the space the picture or the mat fills. IKEA's frame guide says it plainly: its frame sizes refer to the inner dimensions. Add a mat (IKEA calls it a mount) and the frame holds a smaller picture:
| IKEA frame | Picture with the mount |
|---|---|
| 13 x 18 cm (5x7) | 10 x 15 cm (4x6) |
| 21 x 30 cm | 13 x 18 cm (5x7) |
| 30 x 40 cm | 21 x 30 cm (A4) |
| 40 x 50 cm | 30 x 40 cm |
| 50 x 70 cm | 40 x 50 cm |
| 61 x 91 cm (24x36) | 50 x 70 cm |
The mat's window is cut slightly smaller than the picture so it overlaps the edges and holds the print in place. IKEA's 30x40 cm RÖDALM lists a mount opening of 20 x 29 cm for a 21 x 30 cm picture: half a centimetre hidden on every side. Leave that margin free of signatures and lettering.
When you buy a frame, check two numbers: the picture size with the mat, and the picture size without it. Then print the file in the matching size from the tables above.
Wall art print sizes at print counters
Most of these sizes can be printed without a specialist lab. Walgreens Photo lists prints and enlargements at 4x4, 4x6, 5x7, 6x8, 8x8 and 8x10, and posters at 11x14, 16x20, 20x30 and 24x36. Staples lists custom posters at 12x18, 16x20, 18x24, 24x36 and 36x48, on matte or gloss paper.
Notice what is missing. Neither list has the ISO A sizes, and Walgreens has no 3:4 poster size, so an 18x24 file is a Staples-type order. Before you buy a printable, check that its sizes match the place you plan to print. Our guide on how to print wall art walks through home printers, print counters and online labs step by step.
Most popular wall art sizes for printables
We do not have sales numbers, and we will not guess at them. What we can say from the charts above is which files cover the most frames:
- A 4:5 file covers 8x10 and 16x20, both sold by Walgreens and Staples, and 40x50 cm frames.
- A 3:4 file covers 12x16 and 18x24, plus 30x40 cm frames.
- A 2:3 file covers 4x6, 12x18, 20x30 and 24x36: Walgreens' two largest posters and two of Staples' poster sizes.
- An ISO file covers A4 to A1 and comes close to 5x7 and 50x70 cm.
- 11x14 needs a file of its own.
So a printable pack with one large file per ratio covers more frames than a pack with one small file per size.
How to choose the size for your wall
Once you know the sizes, the wall decides between them. Two habits help:
- Measure the space and the furniture under it, then cut paper to the size you are considering and tape it up for a day.
- Count the frame and mat in the size. A 30x40 cm frame showing an A4 print takes 32 x 42 cm of wall in IKEA's RÖDALM.

Questions people ask
What are the standard wall art sizes?
In inches: 5x7, 8x10, 11x14, 12x16, 16x20, 18x24 and 24x36 are the usual frame and poster sizes. In centimetres and ISO sizes: A4 (21 x 29.7 cm), A3, 30x40, 40x50, 50x70 and A1. Walgreens prints posters at 11x14, 16x20, 20x30 and 24x36; Staples at 12x18, 16x20, 18x24, 24x36 and 36x48.
What size should printable wall art be?
Big enough in pixels for the largest print in its shape family at about 300 pixels per inch. A 2:3 file of 7200 x 10800 pixels prints sharp at 24x36 and scales down to 20x30, 12x18 and 4x6. A 4:5 file of 4800 x 6000 covers 16x20, 8x10 and 4x5.
Which ratio fits the most frame sizes?
There is no single one. 4:5 covers 4x5, 8x10, 16x20 and 40x50 cm; 3:4 covers 6x8, 12x16, 18x24 and 30x40 cm; 2:3 covers 4x6, 12x18, 20x30 and 24x36. The ISO ratio covers A5 to A1. 11x14 and US Letter are each their own shape.
Is A4 the same as 8.5 x 11?
No. A4 is 210 x 297 mm (8.27 x 11.69 in); US Letter is 8.5 x 11 in (216 x 279 mm). A4 is a little narrower and noticeably taller, and the shapes differ, so a file made for one leaves a strip or gets cropped on the other.
What size frame do I need for an 8x10 print?
An 8x10 frame without a mat, or a larger frame with a mat cut for 8x10. The mat opening is a little smaller than the print so it overlaps the edges: IKEA's 30x40 cm RÖDALM mount, for example, has a 20 x 29 cm opening for a 21 x 30 cm picture.
